This shape sort is best for ages 2-4 because it names a star as a star rather than a decagon (i.e., the actual mathematical name). The reason for including the non-mathematical name star is because of the prevalence of stars in prints/images/toys that children might need to identify by the name star rather than decagon.

This shape sort is best for ages 5-7 because it names a star a decagon (i.e., the actual mathematical name). By 5 years old it is expected that children could identify a shape as a star and would be ready to learn its mathematical name.
